She had just started taking more naps and hadn’t had her eyes checked in four years. So she went for eye test. But when she came to know the real truth she was heartbroken.
When Alison Haspel, 51, learned that her last eye exam was four years ago, she went to her usual optician for a checkup. The optician referred him to an eye hospital for some further tests after noticing swelling at the back of his eye. But a CT scan revealed a 5 cm benign brain tumor called meningioma in his head.
The case was so serious that Alison underwent a 14-hour operation to remove the non-cancerous mass and is now recovering. Alison, from Northwich, Cheshire, works in customer services. He told that he never thought that anything could go wrong.

Alison’s 54-year-old husband Scott is a ground maintenance manager. They also noticed changes in her behavior similar to dementia and said that she was calmer than usual. She was also struggling with anxiety attacks every day. She said that she used to forget birthdays and things like that and she started limiting things to her age only. She now believes that these symptoms were due to the tumor.
The tumor was discovered in October 2023, and he was given steroids to shrink it before surgery. Despite the size of the tumor, Alison did not experience any significant symptoms, such as headaches. In November 2023, he underwent a 14-hour operation at Royal Stoke University Hospital. After battling double vision for six weeks, he now has regular MRI and CT scans every six months.
